All specifications are given for 8x oversampling, specifically at CD audio's sampling rate. Before this, the hardware MSB transition (where the largest value bit turns on) was at the zero-crossing, where a DAC would instead recreate the range -32767 to 32767 as a continuous scale, requiring fine-tuning for lowest linearity at low bit depth volumes. Part of the large stride that it made forward was in the use of two separate colinear 19-bit DAC units, one for the positive-going analog waveform, and one for the negative.

PCM63P is both suited for audio by design, and unsuited for other applications. Its use in flagship audio DACs was announced before it became available. It follows the PCM61P and PCM58P, positioned for high-end audio. Rewritten history to fit some marketing perspective.īurr-Brown PCM63P is an audio DAC. If I knew the chips were worth something I'd probably sell the ones out of a not working unit that needs recapping but don't plan to until it's a must.Ī great sounding cd player (and recorder for transfers of vinyl or cassettes or anything I run in aux position in rca outs like some good old tascam tape machines too).Ĭlick to expand. That seems as apocryphal as marketing tales of a G3 Macintosh being a supercomputer. Odd thing is all the great info that was online over a decade ago is nowhere to be found now. I don't know what they go for now and don't want to even worry. I don't know if that's why the unit cost me 599.00 new in 1998 but in any case I like it a lot and have obtained backup units thru the years for far less. Well whatever they are they sound excellent to me, it's a big difference if I play a cd through my DVD player or use one in aux position.

Later I realized how good my cds sounded as well as ones I made, I did some research and it mentioned burr brown adc's and dac chips and I researched those (this was a long long time ago) and learned they were very high quality. I bought it because it was a stereo cd recorder/player and worked like tape deck to make a cd. I don't know (or much about dac chips), but I do know really like the sound of the burr brown chips that are in my 1998 Pioneer pdr 555 rw.
